This B.C. Day, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is celebrating a major victory for transparency in Victoria.
It took years of CTF advocacy, peer pressure from an independent MLA, heightened media scrutiny and a blistering report by B.C.’s Auditor General, but B.C.’s 85 MLAs have finally agreed to post their expenses online for all to see.
This means taxpayers, media and the CTF will be able to examine every receipt politicians charge to taxpayers. If there is a politician dredging their moat or buying video games with tax dollars, we’ll find them.
We couldn’t have accomplished this without your help. Hundreds of British Columbians signed our petition for MLA expense accountability, and many of you wrote letters to various politicians demanding this change. It took a while—but B.C.’s 85 MLAs finally heard our call.
If you’ve got five minutes today, drop your local MLA a note and thank them for agreeing to open their books.
You can find your MLAs contact information here: http://www.leg.bc.ca/mla/3-1-1.htm
So congratulations—and have a happy and safe B.C. Day weekend!
